One of the fun things about people who live life without limits is their willingness to take risks. Playing ‘not to lose’ is no way to live. It’s when you dare to listen to the voice in your head (or your heart, if you will) and live the life you’ve imagined –  that life that changes for the better. Think how different your life would be if you embraced a ‘wouldn’t it be interesting if…’ mentality? Wouldn’t it be interesting of you stopped listening to dream robbers in your life? Wouldn’t it be interesting if you started writing that book, or opened that business, or took that trip? It’s not too late to turn a ‘one of these days’ mentality into a ‘wish I had done it sooner’ reality! Wouldn’t it be interesting if you started today? Trust that voice in your head and go for it. What are you waiting for?

Leadership Minute: Your Hopes and Dreams

One of the most important things you can do as a leader is to never give up on your hopes and dreams. They are the lifeblood of your heart and the passion that drives you. We’ve all faced setbacks and disappointments that have tried to discourage us and cause us to give up. It’s part of our learning and growth. But the challenge today is not to dwell on things of the past; especially the defeats and failures; they are but stepping stones on your success journey. Be encouraged today to embrace your hopes and dreams. Dare to believe that your best days are ahead of you and that all things are possible. Don’t allow fear, frustrations, or unfulfilled potential to hold you back. This is your day to embrace your possibilities and look to the future with hope and confidence.

Leadership Minute: Breaking Down Big Thinking

Your achievement is proportional to your thinking. Until you embrace big thinking you will not see big results. Of course, big thinking doesn’t guarantee big results but it is the starting place. Big thinking, like big dreams, requires more. You can’t just think it or dream it. You have to devise a plan and go to work. But big thinking is foundational to your success. Big thinking or ideas is nothing more than a series of accumulated incremental steps in the process toward that end. Begin by asking the basic questions: What can I do today? Who can help me? What resources do I have? What resources do I need? What changes do I need to make? How soon?, etc. Start asking and start answering. Create your plan and work your plan. Think big, grow big, and work to be big. There is no other way. But it all starts with big thinking.

Leadership Minute: Bouncing Back

As a leader, the question is not whether you will have setbacks, but when you do, how quickly will you bounce back? It happens to all of us and it comes with the territory. Your resilience as a leader is crucial to your success. You and I have choices to make when faced with setbacks. We can let it get us down and discourage us to the point of giving up. Or, we can get up, dust ourselves off and get moving. None of us are exempt from setbacks so you need to stop with any notions that they are not supposed to happen to you. Get over it. Bouncing back from setbacks means you were doing something worthwhile and encountered an obstacle. Don’t let it throw you off your game or keep you from reaching your goal. How long will it take you to bounce back? That is entirely up to you. But the sooner you bounce back the sooner you will reach your goal. Get moving!

Leadership Minute: Wisdom for the Ages

If you want to know what kind of leader you will be five years from now then look no further that your friends. It’s not whether they can take the journey with you; but do you want to take the journey with them. Choose your friends wisely. When you plan your life on purpose you get intentional results. What is the difference maker? Faith.  No plan is problem-free. You can plan for the future but you can’t predict it. Things happen. In Through adversity will come courage and character. In success will come gratitude and humility. The thread that connects the two will be your faith. Hold on to it tight and never let it go.

Leadership Minute: Your Task at Hand

What is your BHAD (Big Hairy Audacious Dream)? You see I am convinced that many a leader settles for that which they know they can achieve. And while that may be good and noble it’s not big. It’s not audacious. It’s not far-reaching enough and does not necessitate much prayer. I’d like to challenge you today to have such a BHAD that is scares you to pray like you have never prayed before. Reverse your prayers for strength to do what you can do and pray for strength and wisdom to do what you know you can’t do by yourself and without divine intervention. Increase the size of your dream. Dare to pray big prayers and dare to do great things.

Leadership Minute: Proper Perceptions

As you weigh your goals, dreams, and aspirations be sure not to sell yourself short. By that I mean your goals should stretch you to a place of challenging your own self-imposed limitations. We tend to play it safe by staking our claim to that which we feel we can comfortably achieve. But why settle? Why not set goals and dreams that are out of your present capacity to attain and see how you can grow to the challenge? You will only risk what your perceptions of yourself will allow. Simply put; aim high, remove the lids that would hold you back, and grow to new levels you thought were not possible.

Three Boundary-Busters Every Leader Must Face

About 350 years ago, as the story is told, a shipload of travelers landed on the northeast coast of America. The first year they established a town site. The next year they elected a town government. The third year the town government planned to build a road five miles westward into the wilderness.

In the fourth year the people tried to impeach their town government because they thought it was a waste of public funds to build a road five miles into a wilderness. Who needed to go there anyway?

Here we had people who had the vision to see three thousand miles across an ocean and overcome great hardships to get there but in a few short years were not able to see even five miles out of town. They had lost their pioneering vision. They were unable to move beyond their current boundaries.

If not careful, we too can get stagnant where we are and not move forward with fresh thinking and ideas. Expanding your borders as a leader and as an organization is about growth. Will your current way of thinking cause you to move forward in a positive way? Are you placing limits on the possibilities that could be yours? Here are three boundary busters that I think held the people back 350 plus years ago that could be holding you back today.

Having a big vision without the big picture.

Initially the people knew what they were signing up for and went along. But the vision that took them 3,000 miles at the start would not take them five additional miles at the end. Buy-in at the beginning of your vision is imperative but if there is no big picture to motivate your people to its completion it’s tragic.

An unfulfilled vision will frustrate you as a leader and disillusion your people.  If you want to expand your boundaries beyond where you are today then your people must see the big picture. Open it up to them. Let them see the steps in the process and why they are needed. Do your people know your ten year plan? How about a five year plan? Do you know it? When your vision is clear then the big picture will make sense but not until then. If you want your followers to know it then it’s up to you as the leader to share it.

Limitless possibilities constrained by limited accomplishment.

The first few years these new travelers did what was necessary. They established a town site and government. By all accounts they were making progress. But a shift happened. Their thinking changed. What do you suppose happened? My guess is that the urgency of the vision that brought them there has now settled and they have become comfortable.

Complacency is a threat to any organization and leader. When you allow yourself and those you lead to “auto-pilot” their work, goals, or expectations then you have become settled. You may not be losing ground but you are certainly not gaining any. The townspeople could not see the big picture because they were comfortable. Never mind that they could have expanded their borders and improved their way of life. So long as you are comfortable where you are you will never expand your borders.

Small thinking in the face of great possibility.

Surely there was more to the 3,000 mile journey than a cozy little township. Was not surviving the hardships of sea now worth greater exploration? Expanding your borders is not about settling. Do you not have new trails to blaze? Do you not have new discoveries to make?  Sadly, in the face of such great opportunity were those who were ready to obstruct progress.

The lesson learned here is this: Not everyone who starts with you will finish with you. Not everyone will pay the price to go to the next level. The greater the sacrifice the fewer your numbers will be. Many will want to bask in your accomplishments but not all will help you get there. But leaders understand this and will not hold it against them. It is the point of separation. If you want to expand your boundaries as a leader you must be willing to pay the price. Sometimes you will travel alone. But your possibilities are there for the taking if you are willing to lead the way.

Leadership Minute: Like What You Do

Let me ask you a question. Do you like what you are doing? Chances are that unless you like what you are doing you will not find the success you long for. And if that is the case then you will likely not find the deep level of fulfillment you desire.  Your success is linked to your passions. When you discover your passions and pursue them with all of your might then your success is going to follow. Don’t settle for making a living. Dare to step out and live the life you were destined to live. Live a life of passion and purpose.

Your growth and development as a leader in large part is determined by what you believe to be true about yourself. When you learn to take the lid off of any self-perceived limitations you can begin an amazing lifetime journey. Believe in yourself and tune out any doubters. What others think doesn’t matter. It’s as you remove your doubts and limitations that you can dare to dream, reach your goals, and live your destiny. What limitations are holding you back? Let them go! Live your life with no limits and live your life on purpose!
